The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making. The central goal of this volume is to bring the learning perspective into the discussion of intuition in judgment and decision making. Am I being too hard on intuitive decision making, or not hard enough? One axiom of the psychology of decision making, after all, is that humans tend to be bad at thinking in absolute terms like dollars, distance, or dimensions. Thus, my research spans topics in both thinking and memory and in both cognitive and social psychology. I'm more inclined, however, to feel sorry for the people on the receiving end of today's intuitive decisions and judgments. Recently, I have also become interested in applying this research to issues in the legal system and in decision making generally. They include bodies of knowledge drawn from statistics, decision science, social and cognitive psychology, and 'judgment and decision making' (JDM) psychological literature. Instead, we tend to think in terms of comparisons on an analog scale. Behavioral economics and the psychology of judgment and decision-making, both of which I rely heavily upon here, study many of the same cognitive mechanisms but in different contexts.
